Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital respiratory physician and Respiratory Care WA Clinical Advisor, Clinical Professor Dr. John Blakey, was recently featured in the Medical Forum. In the article, he highlights the critical role of lung function testing, particularly spirometry, in accurately diagnosing asthma and COPD, ensuring that treatment is appropriately matched to each patient.

“Many people treated for asthma or COPD have never had a formal diagnosis. Studies show that around a third of patients receiving treatment for these conditions may not actually have them, while others with severe disease are being treated as if their condition is mild— and vice versa,” says Professor Blakey.

“Knowing more about the type of problem that exists in an individual allows us to tailor therapy.”
