Respiratory Care WA is proud to be part of the Western Australian Department of Health’s Older Adult Health Hubs initiative, delivering specialised respiratory assessment, diagnosis, education and support for older Western Australians.
The Older Adult Health Hubs are a new community-based model of care designed to improve access to healthcare and better coordinate services for older people. The first hub opened in Cockburn earlier this year, bringing together a range of health providers in one location.
Through the initiative, Respiratory Care WA will provide respiratory services for adults aged 65 years and over, and First Nations people aged 50 years and over, from its Cockburn and West Perth Respiratory Hubs.
“Respiratory health has a profound impact on how people live, particularly as they age,” says Rael Rivers, CEO of Respiratory Care WA.
“By working alongside the WA Government and fellow health providers, we’re helping ensure more people can access the respiratory care they need. Early identification and effective management of respiratory conditions can make a real difference to a person’s health, independence and quality of life.”
Respiratory conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) can become increasingly challenging with age. Access to timely assessment, education and support can help people better manage their symptoms and reduce the risk of complications.
“By 2036, it’s predicted that one in five people living in WA will be aged 65 and over,” says Hon. Meredith Hammat, Minister for Health and Mental Health.
“These hubs represent an important shift in how care is delivered, and by investing in new ways to care for our elderly, we hope to improve how the broader healthcare system works for all Western Australians.
Access to the Older Adult Respiratory Hub service is available via referral from a GP or allied health professional.
