Western Australians encouraged to ‘Do Blue. Do You.’ this National Asthma Week

Western Australians are being encouraged to Do Blue. Do You. this National Asthma Week (1-7 September), with Respiratory Care WA calling on the community to raise awareness of a condition affecting nearly 2.8 million Australians and around one in every nine people.

The campaign invites schools, workplaces, sporting clubs, community groups and individuals across Western Australia to show their support by doing blue their own way, whether that’s wearing blue, hosting a fundraising event, decorating a workplace or classroom, or sharing their support online.

Respiratory Care WA CEO Rael Rivers said National Asthma Week is an opportunity to encourage conversations about a condition that continues to have a significant impact on individuals, families and communities.

“Asthma is often underestimated because it is common, but for many Western Australian families, its impact can be life-changing.”

“For many families, asthma means navigating symptoms every day, managing triggers, attending regular medical appointments, workplace and school absenteeism and, in some cases, dealing with emergency hospital visits.”

Despite advances in treatment and management, asthma remains one of Australia’s most common chronic health conditions. In 2024-25, there were approximately 33,000 hospitalisations where asthma was the primary diagnosis, with 45 per cent involving children aged 14 years and under.

Asthma is also the leading cause of disease burden among Australian children aged one to nine years, highlighting the importance of awareness, education and early intervention.

“As a community, we can all play a role in supporting people living with asthma and other respiratory conditions,” Mrs Rivers said.

Do Blue. Do You. is about making asthma awareness personal. There is no right or wrong way to get involved. Whether you wear blue, host a morning tea or share information with family and friends, every action helps start important conversations and raise awareness.”

In support of National Asthma Week, several Perth landmarks and locations will also light up blue, helping shine a light on asthma and the thousands of Western Australians living with respiratory conditions.

Funds raised through the campaign will help Respiratory Care WA continue delivering free respiratory diagnostic, education and support services to people and families across Western Australia.
