Take a Deep Breath

World Asthma Day

Tuesday 5 May 2026

Asthma affects 1 in 9 Australians and is one of the most common chronic conditions, especially in children.

Many visits to Emergency Departments are preventable, yet gaps in diagnosis, care, and access to treatment mean too many people are still struggling with a condition that can be managed.

World Asthma Day brings people together around the world to raise awareness and work towards better care for all, so everyone can breathe a little easier.

Meet Anthony Duffy

“Asthma took over my day-to-day life before I even knew that’s what it was.”

Anthony relied on his inhaler constantly and was forced to give up many of the activities he loved. After hearing a talk from a Respiratory Care WA educator, he self-referred to our Adult Respiratory Hub, where he finally received a proper diagnosis and personalised support.

What is asthma?

Asthma is a long-term lung condition that affects a person’s airways.

While asthma cannot be cured, with the right diagnosis, treatment, and management plan, most people can manage their symptoms and live active, healthy lives.

Webinar: Healthy Lungs, Healthy Planet: Why Good Asthma Control Matters

📅 Tuesday 5 May
🕛 12 to 12:30pm
📍Online – Microsoft Teams

Presenter: Dr Stephen Oo, Paediatric Respiratory and Sleep Physician

About the webinar: Did you know poorly controlled asthma has a higher carbon footprint than well-controlled asthma? In Australia, reliever inhalers alone generate over 350,000 tonnes of CO₂ each year – equivalent to hundreds of thousands of cross‑country car trips. This webinar explores how better asthma control can improve health outcomes and reduce environmental impact.
