Respiratory symptoms in young children can be confusing and difficult to diagnose. Coughs, wheezes, and other breathing issues often overlap, and treatments can vary widely. While some children require asthma medications or antibiotics, others can often be managed without medications.
To support families, Respiratory Care WA has launched a dedicated bulk-billed clinic for children under six years old, currently running fortnightly and overseen by Paediatric Respiratory and Sleep Specialist Dr James Gibbons.
“Identifying and managing respiratory disease early is important, but in young children it can sometimes be difficult to figure out exactly what is happening. This clinic aims to provide clear answers and guidance for parents navigating common but sometimes complex symptoms,” says Dr Gibbons.
“Most of the time, the diagnosis relies on the history provided by the family and findings from the child’s examination. Occasionally we also arrange other assessments, such as imaging or blood tests. Lung function tests, unfortunately, aren’t usually possible at this age.”
The clinic focuses on clarifying diagnoses for conditions such as:
- Chronic wet cough
- Recurrent episodes of wheeze
- Early asthma
- Other respiratory conditions
In most cases, children are seen once or twice to diagnose and provide a management plan, with ongoing care provided by their GP. When more serious conditions are suspected, the clinic can also facilitate onward referral to other centres.
By offering expert assessment and guidance, this clinic helps families understand their child’s health and ensures children receive the right treatment at the right time.
Families wishing to refer their child should contact their GP to arrange a referral to the clinic.
