Western Australians are being invited to “Do Blue” this September to raise awareness of asthma, a condition affecting more than 230,000 people across the state.

From blue-themed fundraisers to iconic landmarks glowing blue at night, the initiative is part of Respiratory Care WA’s (RCWA) annual Do Blue. Do You.” campaign for National Asthma Week (1 to 7 September).

Respiratory Care WA’s Acting CEO, Rael Rivers, said the campaign is about starting conversations that could save lives.

“Asthma is one of the leading cause of disease burden in children aged 5–14, yet many people still miss the early signs or live without the right treatment plan. By turning WA blue, we’re starting important conversations about early diagnosis, prevention, and the right care,” says Ms Rivers.

The latest Australian Burden of Disease Study 2024 by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare shows asthma accounts for 11.96% of the total disease burden in this age group, making it one of the most significant chronic health conditions for children.

Communities across the state are being encouraged to get involved — whether by hosting a blue-themed morning tea, wearing blue to school or work, decorating shopfronts, or taking part in the blue light trail that will illuminate Perth and Bunbury landmarks in the lead-up to and during National Asthma Week.

“Every activity will help raise funds to support Respiratory Care WA’s free in-community services which include diagnosis through lung function testing, education, and support to help Western Australians breathe easier.”
