Access to
Community Care

At Respiratory Care WA, our mission is to ensure that every Western Australian has access to high-quality respiratory care, regardless of where they live or their socio-economic status.

We believe that equitable access to community care is essential for improving lung health and overall well-being across our state. Our advocacy is focused on breaking down barriers to care, expanding services to underserved populations, and ensuring that all individuals receive the support they need to manage their respiratory conditions effectively.

Our key areas of advocacy can be found below:

1. Expanding Access to Respiratory Care in Underserved Areas

Reaching Rural and Remote Communities: Western Australia’s vast geography presents unique challenges in delivering healthcare to rural and remote areas. We advocate for the expansion of respiratory care services, including lung function testing, asthma education, and specialist consultations, to communities that are currently underserved. This includes supporting telehealth initiatives that connect patients in remote areas with respiratory specialists and other healthcare providers.

Mobile Health Clinics: We support the development and deployment of mobile health clinics that can bring essential respiratory services directly to communities with limited access to healthcare facilities. These clinics can provide diagnosis, education, and support for respiratory conditions, ensuring that all Western Australians, regardless of location, have access to the care they need.

2. Addressing Socio-Economic Barriers to Care

Reducing Financial Barriers: The cost of healthcare can be a significant barrier to accessing respiratory care, particularly for low-income families. We advocate for policies that reduce the financial burden of care, including the expansion of bulk-billing services, subsidies for essential medications and medical devices, and the removal of out-of-pocket costs for necessary treatments and consultations.

Culturally Appropriate Care: Western Australia is home to a diverse population, including Indigenous communities and people from various cultural backgrounds. We advocate for the provision of culturally sensitive care that respects and responds to the unique needs of these communities. This includes employing multilingual healthcare providers, offering translation services, and ensuring that educational materials are accessible to all.

3. Promoting Integrated and Coordinated Community Care

Integrated Care Models: We support the development of integrated care models that bring together GPs, respiratory specialists, allied health professionals, and community health workers to provide comprehensive and coordinated care. This approach ensures that patients receive timely and effective treatment, with seamless communication between different providers, leading to better health outcomes.

Community Health Partnerships: We advocate for stronger partnerships between community health organisations, government, and healthcare providers to enhance the delivery of respiratory care at the community level. These partnerships can help identify and address local health needs, create tailored interventions, and ensure that resources are used effectively to improve community health.

4. Enhancing Education and Support for Self-Management

Patient Empowerment: Empowering individuals to manage their respiratory conditions is key to improving health outcomes. We advocate for the expansion of patient education programs that provide the knowledge and tools needed for effective self-management. This includes offering workshops, support groups, and one-on-one consultations that teach patients how to use their medications, recognise early signs of flare-ups, and adopt a healthy lifestyle.

Family and Caregiver Support: Managing a respiratory condition often requires the involvement of family members and caregivers. We support the development of resources and programs that educate and support caregivers, ensuring they have the knowledge and confidence to assist their loved ones in managing their respiratory health.

5. Advocating for Policy and Funding

Healthcare Policy Advocacy: We work closely with government agencies and policymakers to advocate for systemic changes that improve equitable access to respiratory care. This includes lobbying for increased funding for community health services, advocating for policy changes that support initiatives that reduce disparities in health outcomes across different populations.
